Straight Talk On Why You Should Use Social Media To Market Your Business

The new way of marketing with social media is not just a different set of rules; it’s a whole new game.  Marketing is being totally transformed and the internet is a game changer.

For the minimal cost of internet service, it’s possible to reach the entire world from your computer.

The days of old fashioned (traditional) advertising are numbered.  Have you noticed how many newspapers and magazines are either closing or moving online?

Even television commercials (yuck) are slowly becoming less and less effective.  Why?  Because more people are spending their valuable time online and much less time sitting in front of the television.

The game changer, the internet, has created lots of different venues for reaching prospective customers and clients.  Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Blogging, just to name four, are all effective platforms for engaging your target audience and making valuable and lasting connections that can lead to sales.

Social media venues are ideal places small business owners can go to interact with their target market and with other business builders.  The days of shouting out sales messages are over!  Entrepreneurs can now create their own communities based on their passion, products, or services.

Cobweb-covered, Unknown, Unread, Unvisited Blogs

Blog marketing gives your business a voice.

If you are creative with that voice, you will also enjoy the undivided attention of a captive target audience (which, as you know, can lead to long term relationships and sales).

Using your voice to introduce and promote your products or services is a cost effective manner of advertising and building your business brand.  Blogging is one of the best, most widely-used, and simplest shoestring marketing platforms you can use to grow your business.

However, a cobweb-covered, unknown, unvisited blog is as good as NO blog at all.

Is your blog hiding in the shadows?  Gathering moss instead of gathering steam?  Looking more like a ghost town than a landmark destination? [Read more...]

Email Marketing: Unhappy With Your Open Rate?

Have you felt the disappointment (sting) of sending out a broadcast to your list and having only a handful of subscribers … or maybe even no one … open your email?

Ouch.

If you’re anything like me, you go back to your contact management system and re-read your message about a hundred times, hoping to figure out what went wrong.

You may have sent out a very special announcement, a super duper freebie offer, a biz tips video, an invitation to a teleclass, a survey, or an inspirational story – or something else you felt your list would find valuable.

And yet they’re not responsive.

Hardly anyone opens your emails and you’re left, puzzled, as to what you should do to improve your open rate. [Read more...]

Integrity vs Scarcity

Guest Post by Yvonne Jones

I recently read an article in the Wall Street Journal Sunday edition entitled “Sales Pitches You Can’t Resist – and Why?”  The first paragraph alluded to the fact that many shoppers head to the mall with good intentions, but retailers know how to get inside their brain and derail their good intentions.

The article mentioned some triggers and their appeal.  I selected just two:

1) “Our Big Sale Ends Tomorrow/Today/In a Few Hours!”  This is aimed at your survival instincts, and its appeal is that you want to grab what’s available or be left behind.

2) “Save $250! (New Price $500)” This is aimed at your price-sensitive side.  According to Lars Perner of the University of Southern California’s Marshall School of Business, you fall for it because the idea of big savings puts the deal at the center.  Your brain often perceives the actual price as more reasonable because of that big price difference.

The article made me think of those of us who market our business online, whether we are in the Internet Marketing niche or some other niche.  Do we consistently demonstrate integrity or do we feed on other’s scarcity mentality?

There are lots of marketers with tremendous integrity.  We know that if they announce a limited time offer with a deadline, they will adhere to that.  If they say a particular offer is limited to a certain number of copies, we can trust that will be the case.  I confirmed the truth of such an offer recently as there was a valuable PLR product I wanted to purchase and kept putting it off. When I finally got to the sales page they were sold out.

Many of us are on various e-mail lists and often receive warning notices of pending price increases or removal of a product or service after a certain date.  Some of these may be products or services that you genuinely want to take advantage of.

The challenge may be that some small business owners are operating their business on a budget, whereas others have a specific budget for how much they will spend on products or services in a given period.  How do you feel when you exceed your budget to make the purchase and find that weeks later the price remained unchanged?  Or the product or service that was going to be taken off the market is still there?  Do you feel cheated?  How do you feel about that marketer going forward?  It certainly erodes any trust you had in that person.

Relationships in business, and especially in our online business depends on the know, like, and trust factor.  Promoting a scarcity mentality for personal gain is hardly worth sacrificing your reputation as someone of integrity.

Has this ever happened to you and how did it make you feel?  What action, if any, did you take?

An Irritating Neighbor – You – Your Business – And Twitter

Before I can even complete this first sentence, I bet some of you Twitter fans would love to be able to jump right in and write this post for me!

You know who you are …

You’ve been online for a fair amount of time and you’ve mastered the art of social media marketing.  In particular, you really appreciate and understand the benefits of using Twitter as a business-building platform and a relationship-building tool.

Kudos to you!

And …

You’ve also had the experience of being pestered by an irritating neighbor who sells insurance or yard weasels or some darn thing you don’t want or you already have more than enough of.

Every time you walk outside to get your mail, there he or she is … ready to pounce on you like a vulture to its prey!

Don’t you just hate when that happens? [Read more...]

Business Building Strategy – Smaller Is Better

You might suspect this post is about …

Chunking down your bigger projects into smaller, more manageable bite-size tasks for better organization and to help you stay on track.

Or …

Having a smaller number of words in your blog posts than most other bloggers doesn’t mean your message is any less powerful or has any less impact on your readers.

Or …

Instead of trying to accomplish some daunting, humongous goal – having a series of smaller goals leading up to that giant one is a more sensible approach.

But …

It’s none of the above. [Read more...]

I Met The Fly Lady

I got an email from Michelle Shaeffer the other day with her link to Help For Work At Home Moms.

I love being on Michelle’s list and if you haven’t experienced the joy yet, subscribe as fast as you can!  And I hope you’ll trust me when I tell you I don’t make that kind of remark about all the online marketers I meet.

You can stop reading right now and head on over there if you want … I’ll be here when you get back.  Blogland isn’t going anywhere.

Anyway, I clicked Michelle’s link and discovered the Fly Lady.  What a treat!

I also discovered a free e-course she’s offering called “10 Days of Crock Pot Tips and Recipes”. Yum.

This is the time of year when I pull my crock pot out from the back of the shelf and put that baby into action!

Fall is my favorite season (I like to call it “sweater weather”) and it’s the time of year when I like to make nice, warm, hearty meals.  Turkey chili, beef stew, and chicken soup are three of my favorites.

Back to the Fly Lady …

She’s got that magnetic southern charm and warmth everyone loves, a mile-long list of organizational tips, down-to-earth videos that are funny, too, and an easy, sensible approach to helping you tackle everything from paper clutter all over your house to how to have a shiny kitchen sink.

It’s great to have friends like Michelle Shaeffer who care enough to send a resource like the Fly Lady.  What are your friends and social media contacts sending you these days?

Best Way To Communicate With Your Audience

To tap into the needs of your target audience and ramp up your marketing results …

Communication is the key.

Of course, there are many ways to “talk” to your prospects, clients, and customers.

Are you aware of how your target audience prefers to communicate?

Figuring that out is the cherry on the ice cream sundae!

Your audience may prefer to communicate with you by:

  • Email
  • Phone Call
  • Text Messaging
  • Hard Copy Newsletter
  • Social Media
  • Video
  • Podcast
  • Ezine
  • Direct Response Mail

A “best practice” for marketing your products or services is “Test Before Invest” – and that could mean an investment of either time or money or both. [Read more...]

Dress Your Brand For Success

I have to laugh when someone asks me, “What does an online marketer put on to dress for success?”

And my reply is, “Uh … Pajamas?  Jeans?  Gee, I don’t really know what other people wear while they’re sitting in front of their computers.  I usually wear whatever’s clean and comfortable.”

You obviously don’t need an extensive (or expensive) wardrobe when you work from home.

Of course, you’ll need to change out of your pajamas if you’re attending a networking meet-up or live event.  I’m pretty sure they won’t let you through the door in sleepwear – so I’ve heard.

You can feel free to be a casually-dressed online marketer, but how about your brand?

Are you dressing your brand for success?  Or is it in need of a makeover or maybe some enhancing? [Read more...]

Plan To Market Wisely Or Plan To Go Down The Tubes

Did you know there’s over 100 marketing platforms you can take advantage of to build your business and your brand, even if you’re on a $0 budget?

It’s true!

BUT … here’s the catch:

You won’t experience a lick of success in your marketing efforts unless you choose platforms you sincerely enjoy working and ones that fit into your schedule and lifestyle.

I’ll give you an example …

My friend and newbie online marketing pro, Sheila Atwood, of Newbie Lifeline has experienced tremendous success building her business by utilizing forums as a marketing platform.  I envy her and I think that’s awesome!

Give yourself the gift of getting to know Sheila and let her give you some tips about adding forums to your marketing plan.

For me, forums wouldn’t be a good choice.  Why?  It’s not because I don’t enjoy meeting new people in my target audience, learning about what others in my niche are doing, networking with like-minded business professionals, or striking up interesting and vibrant conversations that, ultimately, direct people back to my website or blog.

Who wouldn’t love THAT?!

However, forums wouldn’t work for me because I don’t have the amount of time and devotion needed to make them work.  In addition to my online business, I work outside the home, as well, and my offline commitments eat into a BIG chunk of my week.

A better choice for me, considering my schedule and lifestyle, would be blogging and social media venues.  And I’m happy to say these two arenas are where I’ve experienced the greatest success in my marketing efforts.
